DVD Review: Animalia: Welcome to the Kingdom
Fortunately, Zoe and Alex, with their friends G’Bubu (from the "great green gorillas growing grapes in a gorgeous glass greenhouse" entry) and Iggy D’Iguana (from the "ingenious iguanas improvising an intricate impromptu on impossibly impractical instruments" entry) gather up the lost spores, despite Tyrannicus Tiger’s attempts to take over during the chaos. The focus on communication is not a bad concept, but it isn’t embedded richly enough in the narrative to really do much teaching about how and why we communicate, and the story often moves along in a rather jerky fashion. The underlying literacy teaching in the alphabet book works better than this more general look at how important communication is. The trip back in time where G’Bubu has to confront his fears and fight some giant frogs seems especially murky in terms of theme.
